Accessibility Statement

Last reviewed: June 2026. As a charity that exists specifically to support people living with sight loss, accessibility is not an afterthought for us — it is central to everything we do. We are committed to making our website accessible to everyone, regardless of disability or impairment.

Our Commitment

Sight Support and Social Hub (Scottish Charity SC016947) aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines cover a wide range of recommendations for making web content more accessible to people with visual impairments, hearing difficulties, motor disabilities, cognitive differences, and other conditions.

Built-In Accessibility Features

This website includes the following accessibility features, available on every page:

Adjustable text size — use the font size controls (–, reset, +) in the top bar to increase or decrease text across the entire site to suit your needs.

Light and dark colour mode — use the ‘Switch colour mode’ toggle in the top bar to switch between a light background and a dark background, reducing eye strain in low-light conditions.

High-contrast text — all body text and headings meet or exceed the WCAG 2.1 AA colour contrast ratio of 4.5:1 against their background in both light and dark modes.

Descriptive alt text — all meaningful images on the site include descriptive alternative text so that screen reader users can understand the content of images.

Semantic HTML structure — the site uses correct heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3), landmark regions (header, main, nav, footer), and semantic markup throughout to support screen readers and assistive technologies.

Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (links, buttons, form fields) are reachable and operable using a keyboard alone. A visible focus indicator (magenta outline) is displayed on focused elements.

Consistent navigation — the navigation menu and page structure are consistent across all pages, making the site predictable and easier to use for everyone.

Known Limitations

We are continuously working to improve accessibility across the site. The following areas are under active review:

Some older PDF documents (such as historical annual reports) may not be fully accessible to screen readers. Where possible, we are converting these to accessible formats.

Some third-party content embedded within our pages — such as maps, video players, or social media widgets — may not fully meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards. We aim to minimise reliance on such content and always provide text alternatives where possible.

Alternative Formats

We can provide information on this website in alternative formats on request, including: large print; audio format; easy-read version; and Braille. Please contact us to make a request and we will respond within 5 working days.

Technical Specification

This website is built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The accessibility features rely on these technologies being enabled in your browser. The site is designed to work with modern assistive technologies including screen readers (such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack), magnification software, and voice input tools.
